Why does my IELTS writing band stay the same?

9 min · Updated 2026-09-17 · MA Standard v1.0
The short answer

Because writing more tasks that nobody reads cannot remove a behaviour nobody has named. A repeated band can sit alongside a recurring behaviour in the English you produce. Learn With MA measures the behaviour, in your own writing and speaking; it claims no numerical or causal correspondence with any IELTS score.

Three things have to be true before you can act on it: the behaviour has to be named, it has to be shown to survive a change of task, and something has to measure it again afterwards.

02Why more practice stops working

Unmarked practice trains whatever you already do. If a sentence pattern is producing three errors a task, then fifteen tasks produce forty-five of them, more fluently each time. The number of tasks is not the variable; whether anyone read them is.

There is a second, less obvious reason, and it catches careful candidates. Accuracy does not rise in a straight line. A writer who starts reaching for structures they have been avoiding will temporarily produce more visible errors, not fewer, because the new forms misbehave before they settle. Read as a band, that can look like going backwards. Read as a profile, it is the shape of something moving.

Habit

A behaviour that appears at least three times in each of two tasks of different type. Three occurrences in one task only is a pattern, not a habit: it may belong to the task rather than to you. One occurrence is an occurrence, and is never named as a finding on its own.

03What is actually being judged

Learn With MA marks produced writing on four dimensions, each asking a different question of the same paragraph. They are published in full, with worked examples, in MA Standard v1.0.

DimensionThe question it asksWhat a score on its own does not show
MeaningDid what you meant arrive, and did you answer the task asked?A position that is present but never stated in one sentence.
OrganisationCan a reader tell where they are and what connects to what?Memorised linking phrases doing the work that paragraph order should do.
RangeWhat did you reach for, and did it stretch to the task?Safe structures chosen so that nothing breaks — the quiet ceiling.
ControlDid what you reached for behave as you intended? One behaviour producing most of the visible errors.

Two more columns are off-screen on a narrow display — scroll the table sideways.

On the third column — It is a constructed illustration, not a finding. Learn With MA has no outcome data: The Record holds 0 rows, n = 0, and will publish every figure with its denominator and date when it does. Learn With MA is independent and is not affiliated with IELTS, the British Council, IDP, ETEC or Qiyas.

04One worked example

Here is the whole idea in one sentence of Task 2. The error is not interesting. The behaviour underneath it is the finding.

Example

Nowadays,it is a fact that many studentsthey struggle with writing.

Habit, not error — two of these add a word English doesn’t need, and the same behaviour appeared in both tasks. Removing it is one move, not two corrections.

Constructed example · nobody wrote this, so it carries no attention stamp.

Questions

01How many practice tasks should I write a week?

Fewer than you think, and all of them read. Two marked tasks a week will move a band that fifteen unmarked ones will not, because the marked pair tells you what to stop doing and the fifteen only rehearse it.

02Can a language model mark my writing instead?

For a single essay, largely yes — and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. What a model will not do is hold your second task against your first, decide whether a behaviour survived the change of task, and stake a dated record on the answer. That is the difference this site is built on, and it is why speaking leads.

03Does Learn With MA predict an IELTS band?

No, and no number is given. A report may carry a note describing where the dimensions we measured overlap with what that examination attends to — with no band, no range and no estimate, because the correspondence has not been studied.
